How to Use Whole Vanilla Beans

It is easy to add real vanilla flavor straight from the bean to your recipes. You will get all of the subtle vanilla flavor notes when you use vanilla in this unprocessed form. You'll also get those great vanilla specks (actually the vanilla seeds) which will show those enjoying your creation that you used the "real thing" in your recipe.

1. Insert a knife in one end.

Lay the vanilla bean flat and carefully insert a knife near one end facing the sharp edge of the blade away from your fingers.

2. Split the bean

Run the knife up the length of the vanilla bean, splitting it on one side only.

3. Scrape out the seeds

Carefully open the bean to expose the thousands of tiny black vanilla seeds inside. Use the backside of the knife to scrape out the vanilla seeds for use in recipes.

Do Not Throw Away the Empty Pod

Place it in your sugar bowl to infuse it with vanilla flavor or allow it to dry and grind pieces with your coffee to make real vanilla coffee.
