The Singing Dog Vanilla Farmer

Beyond Organic

At Singing Dog Vanilla we are committed to supporting sustainable agriculture and rewarding those farmers that grow their crops in an ecologically responsible manner.  Our partner farms utilize organic farming methods and uses no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides (even herbicides that are allowed under USDA Organic standards are not used).

The vanilla vines are grown on indigenous support trees so there is no deforestation of the land. Also, our farmer employs the age-old practice of allowing the vanilla vines to "rest" every third year rather than stressing the plant to continually produce. This is a common practice in Papua New Guinea where agriculture has been practiced since 7000 B.C. and we believe that these low-impact, low-stress methods are positively reflected in the quality of our vanilla.

Fair Trade Plus+

Fair Trade can mean many things and is commonly defined as a transaction in which the producer (not a middleman) receives a fair market price for their goods.

At Singing Dog Vanilla we believe in "Fair Trade Plus+". In addition to receiving a fair market price for the vanilla the farmer receives a percentage of all sales to the end customer. In other words, a portion of a purchase from this website is sent back to the farmers. We do not know of any other Fair Trade program that offers this high level of benefit to farmers.

In an industry where many farmers struggle to survive while others reap the profits, we hope that our partnership model becomes standard practice throughout the agriculture industry.
